  1. AFA GeneS  : Before we started, I wanted to announce that we have 
  2.              a new library in MOS. It's called PostScript PPDs and
  3.              what it contains is what the title says, a
  4.              collection of Printer Description files for most common
  5.              laser printers and imagesetters. The PPD sets are all
  6.              compatible with the new Level 2 LaserWriter 8.1.1
  7.              printer driver from Adobe and Apple. done.
  8.  
  9. Teknosys   : Apple just posted some new ones today on AppleLink, 
  10.              are you aware of these for the new printers release
  11.              this past week? done
  12.  
  13. AFA GeneS  : If you mean the Select 360 and LaserWriter Pro 810, 
  14.              we have them too already. They're included in the
  15.              LaserWriter 8.1.1 disk, and available separately.
  16.  
  17. AFC Pieter : Yep, Apple announced the 810 a little early.
  18.  
  19. AFA GeneS  : Well, it's a warmed over Dataproducts LZR 2080 
  20.              actually.
  21.  
  22. AFA GeneS  : Now then...

  24. AFA GeneS  : Welcome to the infamous end of the month Q&A night at 
  25.              the Mac Operating Systems Forum.. Our fearsome leader
  26.              AFL Bear may be a bit late tonight because of a
  27.              networking problem so I'll serve as host, moderator,
  28.              and cook and bottle washer. The crowd is beginning to
  29.              grow. Since BoardR asked about the LaserWriter 810
  30.              [as our first question] I'll give you a couple of quick
  31.              insights. It's a new workgroup printer, featuring a 20
  32.              page per minute engine, and a maximum resolution of 800
  33.              dpi, released by Apple and based on a Dataproducts
  34.              product. It's designed for large networks, handles 11 x
  35.              17 paper, multiple trays and is capable of simultaneous
  36.              Mac and PC ports--and simultaneous emulation. It also
  37.              features a Dataproducts emulation called Virtual
  38.              Printer Technology, which more or less establishes a
  39.              Chooser selectable item for each emulation the printer
  40.              is capable of. The rest is probably grist for the
  41.              Hardware Forum so I'll end it there.

  43. AFA GeneS  : If nobody has a further comment, we'll go to Rich24 
  44.              for a question. Go ahead please.

  46. Rich24     : My son's LC is having problems releasing the phone 
  47.              port when he tries to print or use it for another
  48.              purpose. Any suggestions as to why this may be 
  49.              occurring and how to free up the port?
  50.  
  51. AFA GeneS  : Is your printer connected to the modem or printer 
  52.              port?
  53.  
  54. Rich24     : Modem.
  55.  
  56. AFA GeneS  : You don't have a modem, then?
  57.  
  58. Rich24     : Yes - it is connected to a switcher box - along with 
  59.              a Midi. Do you have AppleTalk turned on? And can your
  60.              printer work from the printer port?
  61.  
  62. Rich24     : Yes - through the printer port. He hasn't tried that.
  63.  
  64. AFA GeneS  : What sort of printer?
  65.  
  66. Rich24     : StyleWriter I.
  67.  
  68. AFA GeneS  : Well, you should be able to run that from the printer 
  69.              port, which would leave the MIDI and modem to fight
  70.              over the modem port, right?
  71.  
  72. Rich24     : Yes - but the LC is networked to another Mac and we 
  73.              want to use remote printing with StyleWriter II
  74.              software.
  75.  
  76. AFA GeneS  : So you have a three-way switchbox then.
  77.  
  78. Rich24     : The modem is a netmodem. 4 way switcher box.
  79.  
  80. AFA GeneS  : Pieter, you have a thought on this one?

  82. AFC Pieter : I use a 4-way serial switch, and it works just fine, 
  83.              you might also look at the Applied Eng Quadra Port or
  84.              the Axion Port switcher.

  86. Rich24     : The set up used to work - it seems to be a software 
  87.              problem.

  97. Teknosys   : Curious as to the software running each port, sounds 
  98.              like something is hanging either A/B in and/or Out.
  99.              Maybe the switch being turned before the port is
  100.              closed. done

  102. Rich24     : Music shop, pocketPC and Stylewriter II software.

  104. JKP        : I have the same prob in my office. It only started 
  105.              after going to 7.x. Unable to resolve. ga

  107. AFA GeneS  : It's possibly an init conflict of some sort. It's not
  108.              something we can solve tonight, but if you want to
  109.              check for conflicting inits (with a wink to JLR63), you
  110.              can download the Conflict Catcher II demo in our New
  111.              Files library. This product has a Conflict Test that
  112.              automates the process of finding a software conflict.

  115. Rich24     : Thanks for the ideas.

  117. Penzance   : Someone I talk with has a hard drive icon that keeps 
  118.              disappearing. Probable causes? Solutions? She's got
  119.              System 7.0x; reformatted but happened again. Put in Sys
  120.              7 update that should have fixed disappearing file &
  121.              folder icons--no help.
  122.  
  123. AFA GeneS  : Penzance: Does this happen when you use a program 
  124.              that allows an application's window to be "hidden"
  125.              when not in use?
  126.  
  127. Penzance   : It just happens.
  128.  
  129. AFA GeneS  : If you select on the area where the icon is located, 
  130.              does it appear?
  131.  
  132. Penzance   : No and doing a find on files on that drive brings up 
  133.              nothing.
  134.  
  135. AFA GeneS  : Is the drive mounted? And is it formatted with a 
  136.              system 7 compatible formatter?
  137.  
  138. Penzance   : Mounted and formatted?  Yes.
  139.  
  140. AFA GeneS  : System 7 compatible?
  141.  
  142. Penzance   : It's not my drive, so I'm not sure of that one.
  143.  
  144. AFA GeneS  : That may affect this problem, of course. Is this the 
  145.              only drive on that Mac, or are there more than one?
  146.  
  147. Penzance   : I assume so. This person is not a beginner.
  148.  
  149. AFA GeneS  : This is not a question we can answer without knowing 
  150.              more about the setup. Have your friend e-mail us with
  151.              more information on the setup, maybe we can help.
  152. But from what you say, it may be a problem with SCSI 
  153.              termination and cabling too.

  155. Penzance   : The external comes up fine. It's the internal in the 
  156.              Mac that gets lost Who should she email?

  158. AFA GeneS  : Anyone of us here with an AF attached to our name.

  160. Penzance   : I'll pass along what you've said. Everything worked 
  161.              fine previously with the same set up, though.
  162.  
  163. TheRonster : My desktop has a bunch of icons for the three hard
  164.              drives, StuffIt Expander, and .a few other things. Why
  165.              oh why can't I get them to stay in place? I've tried
  166.              holding down Option as I reposition them, but that
  167.              doesn't "stick" either. I boot from one of two drives,
  168.              but they move around with new boots from the =same=
  169.              drive, too. Any ideas? (The "other things" number about
  170.              12, if that matters.)

  188.              desktop and the snap feature is enabled, no trouble.

  190. BSHEFTEL   : I need to set-up a dozen Macs-some PB's, others are 
  191.              Modular-on a daisy chained Appletalk Net. What is a
  192.              fast way to do this? I've wondered if I can copy the
  193.              install disks to a Bernoulli and Install from one
  194.              cartridge.

  196. AFC Pieter : Yes, or you could set it up on the drive and then do 
  197.              a Net install over your network.
  198.  
  199. MSN Media  : There applications that put the data on all machines 
  200.              at once over the net and the packet only hits the wire
  201.              once.
  202.  
  203. BSHEFTEL   : System software is all installed.
  204.  
  205. MSN Media  : Apple makes one called LikeWise, and there's another 
  206.              called Pump and Snatch by ???
  207.  
  208. AFA GeneS  : Be sure, however, that you have site licenses for all 
  209.              your programs. Some software will poll the network for
  210.              the same serial number.
  211.  
  212. AFC Pieter : MS software offers net install capability all you 
  213.              need to do is turn on file sharing.
  214.  
  215. BSHEFTEL   : Would that not be verrry slow? What applications do 
  216.              that? have a name?
  217.  
  218. AFA GeneS  : BSHEFTEL: Most software requires that you have a site 
  219.              license for every workstation. All the major programs,
  220.              QuarkXPress, PageMaker, and lots of utilities look over
  221.              the network for serial number conflicts. But some
  222.              programs give you a net install option so you can
  223.              install a different serialized copy on each station.
  224.  
  225. MSN Media  : It's very slow to do net installs on individual 
  226.              machines, since the packets are repeated each install.
  227.              That's why Likewise and Pump and Snatch are great, less
  228.              traffic on the net.
  229.  
  230. BSHEFTEL   : There are licenses.
  231.  
  232. AFA GeneS  : If serialization isn't a problem, you could carry the 
  233.              Bernoulli disks to each workstation.
  234.  
  235. BSHEFTEL   : Is Likewise advertised, I've never seen anything 
  236.              about it???

  238. BSHEFTEL   : That was the first Idea.
  239.  
  240. MSN Media  : I think Apple keeps LikeWise kind of secret... and it 
  241.              isn't as good as P&S anyway.

  244.              Another quicky--At-Ease for groups, any  comments or
  245.              experience?

  247. MSN Media  : The GraceLAN update manager may be a good way to do 
  248.              that also?

  250. Teknosys   : Since you may not have any network tools, GraceLAN 
  251.              may not be a bad bet.

  268.              PowerBooks, and are finding it quite buggy.

  276. MSN Media  : Well, when I send business cards to one person, his 
  277.              PB 160 crashes every time when he opens it. Also, most
  278.              of us are experiencing less reliability overall.

  280. AFA GeneS  : I know some software needs to be revved to support 
  281.              it and anything that enhances the Finder could cause 
  282.              trouble.

  284. BSHEFTEL   : What is 7 Pro?
  285.  
  286. MSN Media  : That would make sense, Gene. I wonder if there's a 
  287.              list somewhere of software revs?

  289. AFA GeneS  : Matt: I don't have a list of incompatibilities.

  291. BSHEFTEL   : Just come in from the woods...but?

  293. AFA GeneS  : It's a workgroup version of System 7.1 which includes
  294.              AOCE, QuickTime, AppleScript and some Finder tricks,
  295.              in one $149 package.

  297. BSHEFTEL   : Running on Appleshare server?
  298.  
  299. AFA GeneS  : No server version out yet. It's client versions now.
  300.  
  301. AFC Pieter : or $999 for a 10 pack.
  302.  
  303. MSN Media  : I love the Peer to Peer mail. IT's VERY cleanly 
  304.              integrated into the System software.
  305.  
  306. AFC Pieter : The PowerShare server is due out 1st qtr 94.
  307.  
  308. MSN Media  : But I still see great need for the server. Star*Nine is
  309.              coming out with a QM gateway, as well as several
  310.              others
  311.  
  312. AFA GeneS  : But you might try disabling non-Apple inits and see 
  313.              if that causes the crashes to cease.
  314.  
  315. Teknosys   : There is no list, at least none we know of or will 
  316.              speak about, yet ;-)

  318. MSN Media  : Tek: does the latest version of Help know about 
  319.              System 7 Pro?
  320.  
  321. Teknosys   : No, we only had the betas and have not received a 
  322.              release copy yet. Problem is that Apple is making us
  323.              buy the release copy, same for you guys Don? done

  325. Don Brown  : Teknosys, actually, don't know--I'm not on the 
  326.              messaging team.

  328. Teknosys   : We hope to have S7 Pro info by the January release in 
  329.              force.  done

  340.              System 7 Pro?

  342. Don Brown  : If you mean from CE, well, QuicKeys compliments the 
  343.              AppleScript part very well. Nothing from CE for AOCE
  344.              yet, though we are working on making sure gateways are
  345.              available, as well as the QuickMail interface running
  346.              under AOCE.

  348. MSN Media  : I was wondering more about the AOCE features, Don.
  349.  
  350. Don Brown  : Like I said, nothing yet!

  352. MSN Media  : Star*Nine's personal gateway to QM is en route to me 
  353.              now. I sure look forward to checking it out. Novell
  354.              tells me that they're going to use AOCE as the gateway
  355.              to Global MHS and Netware 4.0 entry.

  357. AFA GeneS  : DR Curly: You have the floor. What's your question?
  358.  
  359. DR Curly   : I'm finding the floppy drive in my Centris 660AV to be
  360.              annoyingly sensitive. It will not recognize some disks,
  361.              will crash with others. Some boot up fine. Any comments
  362.              that would unbaffle an ex-Plus user?
  363.  
  364. Teknosys   : Did you read the release notes that came with the 
  365.              machine?
  366.  
  367. DR Curly   : I don't recall reading them.
  368.  
  369. Teknosys   : Seems Apple knows of this problem and the people who 
  370.              duplicate disks on high speed duplicators may have a
  371.              problem.  The release notes for your machine may talk
  372.              about a 10% fallout, yea right.  done
  373.  
  374. AFA GeneS  : Does that answer your question, DR?

  380. Teknosys   : We replace any disks people have a problem with using 
  381.              ones duped on personal machines, good luck 800-SOS-
  382.              APPL.

  384. AFA GeneS  : DR Curly: If you have another Mac handy, you could 
  385.              make a duplicate of the disks on that one. Sometimes
  386.              that works.

  388. DR Curly   : What can the software manufacturers do? I cant install
  389.              some of there products.

  391. AFA GeneS  : And calling Apple won't hurt? Either make a duplicate
  392.              on another Mac, or call the developer for a new set of
  393.              disks.

  399. DR Curly   : I have two set5s of disks from painter 2.0 that do 
  400.              not load via my floppy Is it FD or Apple that is ?g

  413.              an AV Mac can result in problems reading data from
  414.              floppy drives.]

  440.              sound & time code without extra hardware?

  445. MSN Media  : furthermore, I think it only captures at 8 bit.

  448.              by something.

  450. IleneH     : Is 160 x 120 the size of the  original  Quicktime 
  451.              window?

  453. MSN Media  : Either a Radius VideoVision Studio, RasterOps 
  454.              MoviePak, or SuperMac Digital Film or some other
  455.              capture card with a JPEG compression chip. Yes. 160x120
  456.              is original QT. 320x240 is Compact Video, and 640x480
  457.              is "full screen" NTSC.

  459. IleneH     : Is there a JPEG compression card for the 840's DAV 
  460.              slot?

  501.              then. Best thing to do is disable half your inits, and
  502.              see if the problem continues. If not, add them rest
  503.              back in small groups, till it returns.

  507. Masashi    : I did that. but crashes without shift key even when 
  508.              all off with startup manager!

  510. Teknosys   : What version of Startup Manager?

  512. AFA GeneS  : If you take out Startup Manager and Now Toolbox, does 
  513.              it still happen?

  515. Masashi    : Yes.

  517. MSN Media  : Try increasing the RAM partition for the application 
  518.              in the get info box.

  520. AFA GeneS  : What kind of Mac, Masashi? And how much memory--are you
  521.              using 32-bit mode? I'll try that. BTW I use Worldscript
  522.              II (Japanese)I'm in 32-bit. 24 MB.

  526. Masashi    : Q800. Great machine, still.

  533.              kit?

  538.              AOL software (2.0.1)?

  540. Masashi    : Mine is still 2.0.

  542. AFA GeneS  : The difference is really slight.

  544. ChuckS26   : Try starting with shift key down. Trash NOW Toolbox, 
  545.              start again, reinstall toolbox more. You should be
  546.              using version 4.01p of NOW Toolbox which is often the
  547.              culprit with type 1 errors.
  548.  
  549. AFA GeneS  : Also, maybe trash your Now preference files WHILE 
  550.              Extensions are off!
  551.  
  552. ChuckS26   : YES!!!
  553.  
  554. AFA GeneS  : The 4.0.1p update is required for any Mac with a 
  555.              System Enabler.

  557. Masashi    : Yes, mine is 4.0.1p
  558.  
  559. Teknosys   : Which enabler for the 800?

  561. AFA GeneS  : The 800 uses the 040 Enabler...We've got the latest 1.1
  562.              version in our New Files library.

  564. Masashi    : 040 v1.1 (the latest I know of).

  566. AFA GeneS  : There may be a bug fix or two there, cause I noticed
  567.              that a couple of software incompatibilities vanished 
  568.              when I installed it.

  572. ChuckS26   : Enabler 040 is ALWAYS losing its bundle bits..any 
  573.              idea why?

  575. AFA GeneS  : Chuck: That's Norton Utilities problem, not the 
  576.              Enabler. Just ignore it.
